NTM Info & Research, Inc. (NTMir) fully supports the American Lung Association’s call for increased funding of tuberculosis (TB) research, including research directed at multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extremely drug resistant (XDR) strains of TB, and also calls for funding for NTM.
The United States, through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) must maintain a position of leadership to deal with the worldwide risk of MDR-TB and XDR-TB. There are other types of multi-drug resistant lung disease, including NTM, that are of concern to tens of thousands of Americans.
NTMir urges Congress to allocate additional, discrete funding for TB, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) disease. Pulmonary NTM is currently believed to be far more prevalent than TB within the United States, is commonly found in water and soil in the U.S., and is considered to be more drug-resistant than most TB.
Leading medical and research institutions, the CDC, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently met to discuss pulmonary NTM disease prevalence, research and treatment issues. These organizations urgently require funding to help save many thousands of American lives and to reduce the suffering of tens of thousands of Americans.
NTMir is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed on behalf of patients with pulmonary NTM disease. NTMir has assumed a leading role in supporting patient advocacy and voicing the urgent need for medical research for NTM. Patients, researchers and physicians work in partnership with NTMir to advance the cause of countless patients suffering with NTM disease.
